If you don't know, Etsy is a site similar to Ebay (minus the bidding) with sellers and shops selling handmade items. There's everything from jewelry and hand bags to candles and pottery. You should check it out and prepare to spend hours just browsing. I do.
I found a quote by St. Augustine that I really fell in love with and thought would be a nice gift for my husband (and me!) for our 9th wedding anniversary. I started thinking of how I could display it. I thought of having it printed out on nice paper at Kinkos and framing it. But I had an image in my head of what I wanted it to look like and I just couldn't figure out a way to do it (blame my lack of creativity). I started browsing Etsy and came across the seller thesugaredplums and as soon as I saw her listings I knew that I had to purchase a frame from her.
I was able to customize the piece I wanted. The background, the frame color and the quote. After I told her my ideas she made up two proofs for me to look at before she started on the final. Here is a picture of the final piece before it was shipped:
